I'm just going through the chapters quicker with this book because my next class is on Tuesday and I need to read Ch 1-4. This chapter was on reflecting. The main point being that you need to have perspective, so that you don't get distracted or discouraged and veer away from the direction and path that God has put you on. (1, p.43)
They key steps of reflecting are:(1, p.43)
1) celebrating progress
2) clarifying direction and values
3) acknowledging and understanding obstacles
Start out by celebrating the good and starting out on a positive note: what's working well for you right now? Then find out what's important. Once you find out what's important to a person, you can compare that to their values and priorities in life. Often times a person will get discouraged when they value one thing but prioritize another, and they really just need to be shown that, and then asked what steps they want to take to get there. Then in finding out what obstacles a person faces towards reaching a certain end or goal, they can assess the "realities of the situation, both positive and negative."(1, p.46) Reflecting in essence is about "shifting our focus onto what's really important, then making adjustments to our life accordingly."(1, p.47)
But then to make those adjustments, you need to really have a strong sense of urgency or conviction that that's what God wants for your life. If you're not convinced that this adjustment needs to be made, its hard to make that commitment. You have to consider the cost, and if its a price you're willing to pay. (Luke 14:28)
Also, again be sensitive to the leadings of the Spirit, which may differ than what any person may have in mind.
Scripture
Luke 14:28 Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?
