Coaching 101 - Ch 0 (Introduction)

I'm taking the coaching 101 class at church and reading one of the required books, Coaching 101: Discover the Power of Coaching. I figured it would be a good related discipline that will help me accomplish my goals for learning to give good counsel. As I've counseled others I've learned that most people don't really want advice or being told what to do, they would rather figure things out for themselves. This class and book will hopefully help me help others to help themselves.

According to the authors, a coach is someone who comes alongside and offers support to a person so that they can figure out where they are in life, where God wants them to go, and what steps are needed to achieve all these things. By developing others, we are building up other leaders and decreasing our own workload, therefore coaching is a mutually beneficial relationship.

A coach is an encourager. Barnabas was one such man, his name meant, "son of encouragement." What a great name. To think in the days of his ministry, he was living out the biblical example of coaching in equipping the saints for every good work. (Acts 11:23-24)

Coaching is 'forward-looking and action-oriented'(Logan, Robert E. and Carlton, Sherilyn, 2003), has little to do with offering advice, but rather helping people discover for themselves what they need to do to accomplish their God-given goals. Its not about having expert knowledge, but helping people hear the voice of God more clearly for themselves.

This ties in very well with Christian counseling, in that both disciplines aim at investing in others to help them develop into the person God wants them to be.

YES! What a wonderful addition to our understanding more about the Lord's counsel and how He gently leads us in this same effort to come along side of us!
